P.E. - Physical Education

All classrooms receive one hour of Physical Education (P.E.) instruction per week. Physical Education at Franklin Elementary STEAM Magnet School encompasses a multitude of activities allowing all children to become skilled and fit and occurs throughout the day with regular PE classes, structured morning and lunch recess, and other activities throughout the year. Our PE program does not focus on competition, but instead on building skill, flexibility, coordination, and confidence.

Library

Our school library is open to all Franklin students.  Children visit the library with their class once a week.  They are able to check out books with a school issued library card secured by a signed permission slip from parent or legal guardian. Some classrooms also visit the Kensington Library during the school year.

The Arts

All classroom teachers at Franklin Elementary STEAM Magnet School provide art instruction with the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) units provided by the District as well as additional curricular resources. Our school works in partnership with The Rainforest Art Project and The City Heights Music School to provide additional art experiences for all students grades TK-5th Grade.

Music Education

Fourth and fifth grade students are provided music instruction once a week.  The class is taught by credentialed music teachers. Fourth graders receive an Introduction to music where they learn music appreciation and beginning music theory and apply knowledge to the recorder and a variety of percussive instruments. All fifth graders participate in either Band (woodwind or brass instruments) or Orchestra (string instruments).

STEAM

All Franklin students, grades UTK-5, receive STEAM instruction. In addition to classroom instruction, many of our field trips and classroom experiences revolve around STEAM concepts. Franklin’s hosts our annual STEAM Experience Night in the spring which highlights student work and projects. Learn more about STEAM here!

Technology

Franklin has state-of-the-art i21 technology and student devices.  Students learn how to search the net to research assignments.  San Diego Unified School District has taken reasonable precautions to restrict access to harmful matter and to materials that do not support approved educational objectives.
